The human spirit is that part of man that connects him to God his maker (God is a spirit all that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth – John 4:24). The human spirit predates both the body and soul. It was created by God. And God is the father of spirits. The spirit is the heavenly nature of man.
Then they fell on their faces and said, “God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, will you be angry at the entire congregation on account of one man’s sin?” – Numbers 16:22.
“Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!” – Hebrews 12:9
Spirits were created. Bodies were made or formed. To create means to produce something out of nothing or to cause something to come into being. To form or make means to produce something out of another thing. So angels were created out of nothing and man was made out of the dust. Angels are spirits and God created them. But when it came to man, he formed man out of the dust of the earth. God told the man to rule over the earth because he was made to function on earth. Man cannot live in heaven or go to heaven unless he drops his flesh/body because heaven is a realm for spirits. So it is written,
“I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality” – 1 Corinthians 15:50-53
The human spirit also dies but the death of the spirit is different from the death of the body or flesh. To be dead spiritually means to be separated from God because of unbelief. When a man’s spirit is dead, the flesh takes large influence over the soul until he is born again for his spirit to come alive in Christ. The regenerated person now receives power through the Holy Ghost to be led by his spirit instead of his sinful nature/flesh. “For those who are led by the spirit of God are the children of God” (Romans 8:14).
“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires… For Sin shall no more be your master, because you are not under the law but under grace” (Romans 6:12, 14).
The Holy Spirit dwells within our human spirit and works within, through and from our spirit.
And if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his spirit who lives in you (Romans 8:11).
The spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children (Romans 8:16).
Finally, God himself is a spirit and he communicates with us through our human spirit. When you believe and confess Jesus as your Lord and personal saviour, you open up your spirit for the Holy Spirit.
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit is guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:13-14
